Paige Hareb and Tyler Wright survive Round 4 of TSB Bank NZ Surf Festival – Surfing News
New Zealand’s Paige Hareb and Australia’s Tyler Wright successfully survived their respective Round 4 heats of the TSB Bank NZ Surf Festival featuring the Dow AgroSciences Pro, third of seven stops on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s
World Title Series, which went down at Fitzroy Beach in Taranaki, New Zealand, on Thursday, April 12.
Hareb got the better of America’s Sage Erickson in the opening heat of Round 4 to advance through into the Quarter-finals while removing the latter from the contention for the event title.
The second heat saw Hawaii’s Malia Manuel to succumb to Wright, consequently getting eliminated from the competition while sending her rival into the next stage of the competition.
The surfing conditions prevailing at the event site turned out to be quite nice on the second day of the event, offering clean four-to-five foot waves and off-shore winds to the surfers to put their stylish skills on display while battling it out to get
into the Quarter-finals.
The first heat of Round 4 pitted Hareb against Erickson in a battle for survival. Both the surfers had failed to make a solid impact during their Round 3 heats and were determined to put on better performances to extend their life in the competition. The
scales, however, were tipping in Hareb’s favour due to her local knowledge of the waves.
As the heat kicked-off, the local talent locked her first business-wave early in the heat to post a 7.60 on the score-board. After a determined hunt, she managed to catch another juicy wave that allowed her to unload a series of impressive manoeuvres to
add an additional 8.73 points to her account to take her heat-total to 16.33 points.
Erickson failed to offer a strong challenge in response, scoring a 5.90 off her first business-wave and following it up with a 6.43-point ride to finish with a heat-total of 12.33 points. The 4.00-point deficit resulted in her defeat, consequently sending
Hareb into the next stage of the event.
The second heat saw Wright prevail over Manuel, ASP elite tour rookie, to grasp the Quarter-final spot.
The Australian ASP Women’s World Tour sophomore went through a series of average scores before posting a 7.47 on the score-board. She went on to back it up with a 5.90-point wave to eventually finish with a heat-total of 13.37 points.
Manuel responded with a 5.17 and 7.33-point ride to finish 0.87 short of the required score. As a result, she was forced to concede victory and thus the Quarter-final to her rival.
