Question:

Pain Killer Causing Itching?

I took a dose of Roxicet (liquid form - brand name for Percocet) last night, and for about an hour I was really itchy all over. Is this a normal side effect of this pain killer, or was it an allergic reaction? I took this medicine when I got my tonsils out 2 months ago, and I never had the itchy side effect, so I don't think I'm allergic. My boyfriend also took the medicine and had the same problem with itching. Any ideas?

  1. yeah sounds like an allergic reaction if i wear u i would call the doct. and ask whats up instead of ignoring the problem!

  2. Itching is ultra common with opiates... its just part of the ride.  DO NOT TAKE THE BENADRYL, this not an allergic reaction.  Everyone will itch on a high enough dose of opiates... but it feels so good to scratch...  Also opiate allergies are often accompanied with a headache, supposedly a severe one... luckily I don't have this.

For example I experienced itching on these medications: Ty 3, codeine, hydrocodone, oxycodone, methadone, percocet, darvocet, and cant think of any others at the moment.

  3. yes, itching is a normal side effect.  percocet is an opiate and they pretty much all cause some level of itchiness depending on concentration in pill and dosage level.

  4. It is absolutely a normal side effect. If you had a rash accompanied by the itch then i'd worry about an allergic reaction!

  5. Sounds like an allergic reaction. Take a benedryl when you take it and see if that helps.

  6. Its totally normal.  Its a side effect.  It happens with Percocet, Tramadol, Vicoden... its nasty, but the pain dulling effects are usually worth it!  Its the only thing that works on my back pain.  And I itch all day when I take it!

  7. The answer you got about the third one above me is correct.

    I'm adding an adendum, though.

Go to http://www.naturesfoodpatch.com and click on the title that says "Reference Library" and for your convenience, you will see a list of prescribed meds from A to Z.

You click on anything your unsure about that has been prescribed to you or anyone else you care about and it tells you the nutritional deficiencies and or side affects these prescription drugs cause.
