Pain and itching under big toenail?

My son's big toe on his left foot is itching under the nail and it hurts to put pressure on it. The nail and toe look normal (underside of toe is a little red, but not abnormally so). Is it some kind of fungus?

Should I take him to the pediatrician? He's 10.

it might be athletes foot. just soak it in apple vinager and apply tea tree oil 3-4 times a day. Or you can check with your doctor, but do it soon!
