Question:

Pain in right side of neck while running?

I run around 3 miles on the treadmill 3-4 times a week. For the first 2 and 1/2 miles, I'm feeling great but soon to start to feel a pain in the right side of my neck. I am wondering what might be causing this. Is it possible that I'm overcompensating for something in my gait?

  1. I think it would self evident if you were overcompensating.

It would have to be pretty obvious/overt I think to cause you neck pain.

Are you watching television while running on the treadmill or turning your head sharply to the left or right for an extended period?

Have you recently introduced some other activity into your schedule that might be causing the problem? Many people that use treadmills use them in public gyms where they use exercise machines, free weights, go to aerobic classes, yoga etc. The neck pain could also be from any number of daily activities that may have changed slightly. A new seating arrangement in math class, a new pillow etc.

I have felt tightness in the back of my neck from emotional stress that was both made better at times and made worse at times from running. Because your discomfort is on a specific side I would tend to think that it was not caused by running.

    Good luck.

  2. Dont play games....too many sportsman drop dead while running. Go have a Vertual Scan of the Heart . It picks up every thing good and bad.
