Pain in thumb joint?

I fell and bent my thumb back towards my wrist over a year ago and it's still very painfull.  I can't open bottles or use any pressure to twist things although I can move it. If I feel over the area where the thumb joins the wrist it's extremely painfull and goes a little numb. Is the tendon damaged and why has it not healed after a year?
