Question:

Painful bump on armpit?

My friend woke up this morning and had a bump on her armpit. She said it was painful, and I suggested that it was a pimpel. She said it wasn't, because she's had something like that before and this was different. And idea what this bump is?

I know there's alot of information missing. I'm guessing it's about the size of a penny? I'm not sure, I never got a good look at it..

  1. It could be an inflammed lymph node.

This is the sign of a more serious disease.  You friend needs to tell her parents AND see a doctor as soon as possible.

  2. it could be an ingrown hair or a boyle (like a zit but doesn't pop and it's painful). tell her to wait a few days, it will probably go down or go away

  3. No no no. It's not necessarily a sign of a "very serious disease." However, it may be infected and she should see her doctor.

I had a painful lump on my armpit, and it ended up being an infected hair follicle (possibly from my razor). I got antibiotics and it cleared up in no time.

  4. Well my boyfriend had a terribly painful bump under his armpit which turned out to be a cyst.  It started as pimple, then penny, then about a quarter size.  Basically, an bump where an infection came up.  It doesn't spread, but it hurts like h**l.  It won't kill you, but the pain is a nuisance.  We went to ER and they told him to put a warm to hot wet towel on it for 10 minutes, 3 times a day, because it was kind of 'hard', and that softened it until it 'popped'.  SO nasty, but it went away that way.  It only hurts until the infection started to come out, then it was just getting smaller and smaller.

No need to freak, but a any family care physician could tell her what it is...I'd give it a few days though.  Then have it checked out! Good luck to your friend.

  5. Can you move it around? ie, is it attached to their muscle/bone? If you can, I wouldn't be too worried, but they'd better go to the doctor and have a mamogram, to check for breast cancer. Male or female applies.

  6. could be a spider bite. Could also be some water the body is draining incorrectly. See a doctor if it doesn't go away soon.
