Question:

Painfull when i walk?

I'm 36 weeks pregnant. I went into town today and was in absolute agony when i walked. It also hurts when i sit in certain positions. Does anyone have any ideas as to what it could be. I was told at 34weeks the babies head was in my pelvis and he was measuring 37weeks but i just took that as a miss measurement because he's been bang on average all the other times.

  1. hi,

I had this with all of my kids and was told by my midwife that it was a mixture of the pelvic floor muscles being stretched by the weight of the baby pressing down and my body getting ready for labour. She said it was nothing out of the ordinary and many mums-to-be experience it.

    Hope this helps,

    Karen

  2. It certainly sounds like early softening of the cartilage between the pelvis.  This is the SPD that someone else was talking about.  At 34 weeks, your babies head is not engaged, but they may be in the correct position (head down) which is harder than bottom down on your sensitive pelvis, this pushes the hips into an abnormal position and makes walking agony.  Sitting in office chairs or upright chairs is no picnic either.

It does sound however, like you have a big baby.  It may be worth asking your GP to refer you to a physio, as they can measure you for a belt, which might help with your symtoms.  Also, clenching the buttocks (like doing pelvic floor exercises) is supposed to help knit the pelvis together so it is worth doing these every day to help to relieve symptoms.  If you can, when you lie on your back, raise each leg individually as if pulling in to your chest (don't worry if you can't get that far) this relieves your lower back, which is also under strain from these symptoms.

A GP informed me that this can get better before labour, but more likely will improve after the baby is born.

    Good luck.

  3. Hi it will be probably because your baby is engaged, which is why it hurts, and if you baby is measuring big then this could be why you are in so much pain, I know how it feels and it hurts like h**l, but not long to go now.

  4. There's also a chance that this could be Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD).

It's unlikely, but do a google search and check your symptoms, at least you'll have an idea of what to say to your doctor.

  5. I too am 36 weeks and have been suffering like you :) you are not alone!!

I went to mid-wife and was given tubey grip, this helped a bit as it supported bump a bit more :)

I was also diagniosed with Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD) but was told that I wasnt all that bad, if it was bad I wouldnt be able to do anything and need critches to move about :) and also if it was really bad it still wouldnt mean complications if giving birth naturally - although I read that some people was in pain for up to 6 months after, so I am debating whether to bring it up at next mid wife session to ask for a possible c section as dont fancy being in pain like I am now with a new born baby to look after - so dont know if that would be something you would want to discuss with your mid-wife?

I am presently finding it more difficult to walk far and trying to get out of bed is a nightmare but I think I can cope - was advised to kind of get on my side, swing legs around and push myself up with arms so as to not put strain on my stomach/pelvis area, the same with getting out of car, swing legs round and push up with arms, I was also told to walk up stairs one at a time so take a step up and then move the other leg to the same step etc..... - all these suggestions have kind of helped.....

But just think you only have a few more weeks and then meeting your little one and hopefully all this discomfort will be forgotten!!!!!!

    Good luck x
