Painfully Bad Leg Cramps

Recently, I began getting really bad leg cramps at night. Not just any leg cramps, cramps so painful I'm writhing in pain and it takes all my might not to be vocal. In the morning, the muscles feel really tight, and for the rest of the day its painful to walk. For a couple of weeks now, I have been getting at least one a night, but usually have two. The other morning in waking I had two in a row. Usually it happens in my right leg.

Is there a reason for this? Is there something I could take, or something I could do to prevent these cramps or at least ease the pain?

  1. Low blood sugar in the night can be a possible cause.  Also vitamin deficiencies, especially B complex, C and/or D.  I have a soup/stew recipe that I share for free that is relatively easy to make, will include all the nutrients you need, and if a 1/2 cup is taken before bedtime, may relieve your leg pain.

Please e-mail me back if you are interested.

  2. Take a magnesium supplement. Eat corn frequently to ease and prevent those cramps. Put a pillow under your knees when you sleep. I just went through a couple of months of those night cramps and all of those solved the problem within 2 weeks. It's not magic but it works.

  3. Many times leg cramps are from dehydration or a potassium deficiency.  Be sure to drink plenty of water.  Eat a banana a day to increase your potassium.  When  get cramps like that I'll start with 2 bananas a day for 3 days then go down to one a day.  Usually I'm fine by the second day.

  4. You are probably lacking potassium. You need to eat foods that contain potassium, such as bananas, there is also potassium supplements you could take. If you have any swelling or if you feel that you legs are warm to touch you need to go to the Doctor or ER right away, as it is possible that it may be blood clots. The most likely is low potassium. Hope this helps.

  5. My calf cramps always stop if I immediately flex my foot up when the cramp starts.  You point your toes towards your chin to make your foot perpendicular to your leg.  This stretches the calf muscle to relax it and stop the cramp.  This is also a good exercise for heel pain since it stretches the muscles at the bottom of your heel.
