If i paint the cone of a speaker will it distort the sound? or is it just the bubble in the middle of the speaker that really matters?

  1. Do not mess at all  with the speaker's diaphragm. If you  do it wont then work properly.

  2. Maybe a really light coat of spray paint would be OK. But speaker cones vibrate, and eventually the paint will flake off.

  3. Don't mess with speaker's diaphragm. Both cone and bubble are needed for the proper working of speakers. By doing so you may destroy the resonant frequency of the speakers, and the speaker may starts to sound bad.

  4. I'll go the other way on this, although the other 2 answers are absolutely correct for expensive, revealing speakers.  Paint on the cone will not HUGELY affect the sound, although it will affect it.  Speaker builders routinely add mass to cones to change the mass loading characteristics of the diaphram.  If the paint is lightly applied and they weren't expensive and you'll probably never sell them and they are not the best speakers in the world and if you can buy more if you ruin them (that's a lot of caveats), then hey what the heck.
