Question:

Paint exterior trim first or sides of the house?

My home currently has dark brown trim with a yellow exterior. I'd like to change the trim to white and leave the house yellow, but a slightly paler shade.

Do I paint the trim white before I paint the sides of the house yellow, or should I paint the house and do the trim last? Which way is easiest or does it matter?

Oh, and I'll be using an airless sprayer (Magnum), which did an excellent job on my picket fence.

  1. I think it's easier to do the eaves first. The overspray will go down, so spraying the eaves will get all over the walls. After that, mask off the eaves and do the walls. Finally, do the window and door trim by hand.

  2. Paint the sides first, especially if you are using an airless sprayer. The nicest, neatest way would be to go back and do the trim afterwards with a brush. Also make sure you mask off windows, doors etc. anything you don't want the paint to get on. Hope this helps.

  3. If you spray, there will be overspray so I recommend spraying the field first and then painting the trim by hand.
