  1. You want to use a non-toxic paint.  Like Crayola paints are really good.

  2. Tempera paint is fine, but it's kind of hard to get off.

It shows up well though. The girlscout camp i volunteer about with my barn does it every year on the gray horses. But you really have to scrub it with soap and a gel scrubbie to get it off, especially the color yellow.

also you can use that halloween hairspray temporary dye, but it doesn't show up as bright.

I'd say use tempera, like from the craft store.

  3. You could use paint on your pony (like the stuff they let kids finger paint with). But I suggest buying spray-on aerosol hair dye. You can usually pick some up at your local drug store.

  4. We used watercolors, but you can use most non-permanent non-toxic paint, like the stuff little kids use.

  5. Go to a pet store to get paint for your horse. Using finger paints or regular hair dies can irritate your horses skin causing problems after the ride is over.

most pet stores will have these animal dies in stock - they are what a lot of the people who die their poodles, etc use

  6. Finger paint, tempera paint, even face paint would all be fine. :) Basically if it is safe for use around preschoolers, then it is safe to use around horses. Have fun!

  7. I've seen people use everything from poster paints to shoe polish to face paints and no one's had a problem.  I've also seen a white pony get dyed blue with kool-aid to be a smurf.  I that's your dark pony I'd suggest the white Kiwi liquid bottle shoe polish I used it to make my mare a giraffe you just streak it on with the applicator sponge it stays on the surface so it won't bother their skin and it washes right off.  They sell it at any grocery or department store.

  8. Since you are doing a cow, you can pick up touch up paint at any local tack store. It comes in all different colors including black and white. It is safe for your horse and washes off easier than most of the paints you can buy at the store. They make it for cows and horses that show. Be careful with products not made for horses or livestock because some horse can have an allergic reaction to them. My friend dyed her horse for a parade. She used spray dye made for people. Her horse ended up losing a ton of hair and had chemical burns on it.
