Question:

Painted Kitchen Countertops - safe to eat off polyurethane ?

I have been looking into painting my kitchen counter tops. I have found many DIY internet sites but none of them ever state that it is safe to eat from. The final step is a polyurethane finish and I am curious if this is safe. I plan to use cutting boards for food prep anyway, but just want to be aware of the concerns if there are any.

Anyone painted their counter tops ? sealed w/ polyurethane ? is it safe ? Thanks in advance for your replies

  1. Over 10 years ago I used Polyuretine, when I mableized the kitchen counterr tops: and they are still being used. I put on several layers and went with the manufactures suggestins. We however never cut foods on them. WE use a washable cutting board. I also done our concrete kitchn floor in this and had great results. I mop,and use murphy and bleach to clean with. (light solution) Like 1-quart of water to 1-tsp, or more bleach when I clean the counter tops. We have always been careful to not allow food to lay on the surface and wipe off after every spill.

I am not sure why someone is suggesting top coating with polyurethane.  What will it be adding to a good quality paint?

  3. Once it has fully cured, it will be foodsafe.
