Question:

Painted Trim but Natural Wood Doors?

House I just bought had dark stained trim so I primed and painted it so its brighter, cleaner and fresher looking. I did a ivory semi gloss. Looks awesome. It had really gloomy ugly dark stained hollow core flush doors not worth saving I got rid of. I wanted to replace with solid pine the six panel type. I don't want to paint over the wood but instead stain a honey color or just poly it. How horrible would that be... Painted Trim and Casing but Natural Wood Doors? Too much work to take off all the old trim and replace with natural light wood. Have too much other things to work on. I have seen stairs and railings with natural stairs and painted risers and spindles so this concept is similar right?

  1. The door frame and door are traditionally painted or stained the same color as they are architectural focal points of the room. The framing accentuates the doorway and keeping the colors consistent helps the eye transition from one room to another. When the frame and door are two separate colors the door will appear smaller.

If you like the thought of having colors on the door, but don't want to take off all your old frame moulding then you can paint the door and frame in a creamy white (not bright, ceiling white) and if you have the six panel door you can paint the inner panels in some colors to match your decor. This will draw the eye to the panels themselves but because the moulding & background door color is the same the door will not appear small.

Hope this helps but don't worry - the great thing about paint is that it's just paint!

  2. You can have painted trim and wood doors - done all the time.

  3. It is similar, but some prefer all one or the other (my husband for example).
