  1. When I need to paint metal, I'll first apply either metal expoxy or silicon to do sanding first. After the surface is even, I use spray paints, of which are acrylic based, like acrylic paints.

  2. It's always best to sand and prime first, then use an exterior paint in the color of your choice. A good exterior latex is sufficient.

  3. Always Always Always prime first. If you don't, the paint may peel off. If you paint on bare metal and don't prime, the paint WILL peel off. Then you have an even bigger job to sand it all down and start again. Do it right, do it once!

Latex (water based paint is fine).

If you go to a big name hardware store like Lowes, you can buy paint and primer in one. It's latex and you don't have to also prime. I bought the Valspar Duramax exterior paint and it is incredible. It does however cost about $35 a gallon but you shouldn't need too much for a garage door. I would imagine Baer paints at Home Depot have the same thing and that's a good paint.

  4. You can use water base paint.  But you've got to use a good primer or you will be redoing your project again in a year or two.  Clean the doors well, scrub brush and water with a good general cleaner.  If there is mold, use some bleach.  If there is rust, sand.  Rinse well and allow to dry at least overnight before primering.

  5. I highly recommend Sherwin Williams for the following reasons:  You will not have to do a lot of sanding.  They have a Bonding Primer that is excellent.  All you would need to do is remove any flaking paint and wash it.  Use Acrylic Latex, everywhere.  It is the best paint on the market except epoxy, which you don't want to mess with unless absolutely necessary.  If you don't prime (or otherwise prepare) you are wasting paint.  Preparation is the most important part of any paint job, and should never be halfway done.  If most of the paint is already missing, I would rent a pressure washer, blast off the remaining paint, then use Sherwin WIlliams Direct to Metal (DTM) Acrylic Latex, no primer necessary.  When you paint, don't see how far you can make the paint stretch.  The idea is to put the paint on, not leave as much of it in the can as possible.  If you have any other questions, contact me, I'll be glad to answer.  By the way, I'm not affiliated with Sherwin Williams.  I'm a satisfied customer.  I have used their paint many times in the past with outstanding results.  By the way, Bleach does NOT kill Mold, it bleaches it.
