Question:

Painting a dresser white?

I have an old (fair condition) wood dresser. i would like to paint it white to go into a nursery. I have paint primer and sand paper. I started sanding it by hand but soon realized that it is taking a LONG time. My question is how much do I have to sand this plain wood dresser in order to prime and paint it white. It took my almost an hour to do the 3 drawers and have a cramp in my arm now. How necessary is this sanding, and I dont have access to a rotary sander

  1. well there are two phases to sanding, if there is no paint and you want the finish to be a laqour smooth, use a hundred and twenty grade sand paper, this will take off the dust. wipe it down really good; and then you start painting, if you dont you will end up with rough spots since you've already started sanding it.

now you want to prime it and then use at least two layers of paint, prefferably an enamel. good luck hope i helped.

  2. Just sand it untill the suface of the dresser is really smooth Good Luck

  3. If you do 2 coats of primer you shouldn't have to sand, unless there's its extremely uneven.

Sanding is really to remove the old finish so that paint adheres well, the primer does the same job.

I'd recommend an enamel for the final paint, its the most durable.

  4. well either buy a rotary deal wit it or use two coats of primer which doesnt always work good luck.... u can also get it done perfessionally

  5. You sand only to try and make the surface smooth before painting, you don't have to kill yourself by trying to remove the old paint.
