I have a wooden nightstand thats painted dark blue. I got it from jcpennys or something about 2 years ago and it used to match my room but not anymore.

So I want to paint it white. What kind of paint and what brand do you recommend. Does it have to be furniture paint or can it be like the kind that goes on walls? And do I have to strip the other paint first or can I just paint over it? Never painted furniture before please helpp.

  1. Killz makes a craft spray paint for just about any project. I'd rough it up a bit with some fine sandpaper, (unless it's fiberboard!!!!), spray a couple of coats of the Killz spray primer, and then coat it with their colored spray paint for crafts (which you can find at Wal-Mart/Lowe's/Etc.) To make it extra durable you can also coat it with polyurethane, (of which there is also a spray version) but I don't think it's absolutely necessary.

    Hope that helps!

  2. Why don't you ask someone at your local Home Depot (or other helpful hardware store)?

  3. You can use latex paint. I recommend some sort of high gloss or semi gloss.  Flat/eggshell paints get dirty very easily and are harder to clean.

    Lightly sand the piece.

With a damp rag wipe down.

    Let dry.

I recommend using a medium sized paint brush for getting in the nooks as well as a small roller to achieve a uniform surface on the large areas.

2-3 coats should do it.  Let it dry over night.  Enjoy!

I've painted tons of furniture this way and it always looks great.

  4. You can use any paint you want. They have very nice water based enamel paints these days that looks good and are easy to wipe down.

In preparation you need sand it to roughen it up for the paint to stick, then you need to clean all the dust off. Don't worry about the old paint stripping it is a real pain.

  5. It can be the type on walls, it really doesnt matter..

you could even get cheap paint, just maker sure you do TWO

COATS. Paint a coat, wait for it too dry, then paint the next.

NO you do NOT have to strip the paint from before :)

    good luck.

  6. You first need to prep the old paint by using light sandpaper say 100 grit. Then wipe of all dust and paint. Any good interior paint will work just make sure it is as close to gloss or semi gloss. This allows it to be wiped off. I recomend Valspar paint from Lowes.

  7. If you would like a beautiful finish you need to sand it down and then paint in a satin white paint.

If you don't care, just give it a quick rub over and paint it with emulsion (latex) white.  Then sand it down lightly on the edges especially, to show the blue through, and a quick spray coat with varnish will give a long lasting "shabby chic" look.
