Question:

Painting an old table?

I was recently given an old table that was my parents'. It is from the early eighties, and made of a heavy wood. The table and chairs are very solid and worth saving, but have some cosmetic problems. I want to paint them a flat black color, with roughed edges to match the cabinetry in my kitchen. How do I go about doing that? I'm not sure what type of wood it is, but it has a shiny finish.

  1. Yes primer is necessary you must first strip of the old finish, sand , prime, and then apply the new finish..

  2. If it has polyurethane, you need to degloss it and then prime before painting.  You can either sand it down or use Paseo deglosser which you can find at the home improvement center.  I would use Zinsser primer because it is stain blocking and will allow your latex paint to adhere better to the wood.  To get the roughed edges, simply use a fine grit sandpaper along the edges after putting on the 2 coats of latex.  Then I would seal the entire thing using a UVB/UVA protecting, non-yellowing polyurethan like Varathane for ease of cleaning and to protect the surface.

  3. You will need to lightly sand the table down then prime and paint.
