Painting furniture and cupboards?

I have a black entertainment center that is all wood. I dont think it is solid wood, but it isn't particle board though either. Is there anyway to get it white or even brown? Is there any kind of paint that will cover black? Or could I sand it and then paint? Also, same for my kitchen cupboards. They are painted white and I would like them a stained wood finish- can I sand and stain them? Are these hard/expensive projects for my husband to do? Thanks!

I would sand it and then paint it. Once it is sanded then give it a good base coat, and then finish it with a nice finish coat of white. A lot of work but you'll like the finish. (IF done right)
