Painting gloss on top of water based paint...?

is it possible to be able to use gloss paint on top of water based paint? I have original 1930's doors, they aren't in top condition but i filled them in and painted the wood with a water based paint. I don't want to get them dipped or strip the paint off them myself. I do want to keep the doors but don't mind them looking "rustic" , ie a bit worn. I have got a liquid called liquid sandpaper. Would i be able to treat the doors with this liquid sandpaper and then put gloss paint on top of the water based paint still there?

  1. Water based paints make a good undercoat for gloss, I paint all my woodwork with water based, and then gloss them. It takes less gloss and gives a better finish.

  2. hi you can use a WB paint indoors, you will have no problems, but you cant use a WB paint outdoors it will flack off, good luck

  3. That's fine, water based paint makes a very good under coat

  4. Hi,

Interior wise-No problem--But (like 1 of answerer's) use it exterior where a lot of temperature differences occur+ the weathering effects& that's when you'll run into problems. They don't call paints interior & exterior for nothing.

Just ensure you have a clean, grease free surface, then away you go.I personally would use a piece of sandpaper sooner than "liquid" sandpaper as you have more control over it.Use a fairly fine grit if you only want to "key" the surface for painting--Otherwise you may go deeper than you wanted.

  5. I see no reason why not. Obviuosly let the WB paint dry thoroughly then apply the oil based paint.

Ps make sure the surface is dust / flake / grease free. then no probs.

  6. Liquid sandpaper not appropriate.  Use the correct grade abrasive paper.

Gloss paint normally requires an undercoat.  So it depends what this water-based paint is that you have put on already.  If you have used water-based emulsion then you have wasted your time and you need to put a proper undercoat on before the gloss.  If you have put some kind of water-based wood paint on and it is not a gloss finish itself, then you can put your gloss straight over that, even if your gloss is oil-based (that is it thins with white spirit).

Ideally though, you put a proper wood undercoat on and one gloss or two coats of satin finish.

  7. I hate to disagree with the other people,  I painted windowsills with water based paint then exterior gloss, 2 years later they are peeling, and I have to start again.

  8. As previous answers no problem. Main thing is clean well and if the WB paint is a gloss 'key' it with a rub with a nylon pad. Like a pot scourer.
