listen. It took 4 or 5 coats and is still blotchy. Now he is leaving for college and I want to paint it a different color. Should I sand it first? Should I use Kilz as a primer? Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Color suggestions are good too.

  1. Tinted primers are essential, I think you see that. Certain pigments are more sheer than others, red happens to be one of the sheerest. After 4-5 coats you should have good coverage unless you are using a cheap paint with a low pigment load...good paint is worth every penny you pay for it. Do yourself a favor and get a red paint to match the color you just did the room in the Benjamin Moore Aura brand. Since you already have a good base down, you should be able to get away with one final top coat. There's a secret to painting with sheer paints such as reds, here's the technique.

What most folks don't realize is that they wind up over rolling the paint therefore removing paint rather than applying it. In order to avoid this dip your roller in the tray and get as much paint on there that you possibly can without it being gloppy. Apply the roller to the wall working in strips as wide as the roller, roll up, roll down and maybe up again...only three times for each charge of the roller. Dip the roller and repeat this process until you work your way around the room. Do not do the "W" and fill in, you will wind up applying the paint unevenly. Overlap each strip by about 1/2" and work wet edges until you come back to the starting point. Voila! perfect red room.

  2. No matter what color you select prime the whole room with Kilz so the new color takes evenly.  Live and learn.
