Painting over christmas light bulbs?

what kind of paint should I use? I plan to paint over some white christmas lights (yes I could get some colored ones but those are simply still too bright for the desired dimness I want them). I was thinking maybe coloring every other one black and every other a dark red or maybe a dark blue or deep purple? it would look dim and pretty, but I don't know the proper paint to use. Thanks in advance.

You would want to use a heat resistant paint, somewhat transparent. An opaque paint would block the light completely. Why not get lower wattage light bulbs? Or attach the lights to a dimmer switch?
