Question:

Painting over dark burgundy walls?

My house has a great room which the previous owner painted a dark burgundy/maroon color. I'm wanting to paint it a much lighter color and wondering the best way to go about priming & painting, especially specific brands to use. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

  1. Put a couple of coats of Kilz on it.    My son's room had one wall that was dark brown.   Kilz covered it, also my rooms that were white, but had nicotine yellow on them.

  2. Use a quality brand of paint, hard to say which because different brands are available in different places but generally you get what you pay for with paint. Benjamin Moore is good. Home Depot will have what you need. Definitely use a primer here, but still count on needing at least two coats of the colour. Expensive paint will pay off because it usually has more pigment and therefore covers better.
