Painting pannelling that has paint on it?

When I moved to my house, my bedroom had panneling on it. I painted over the panneling. Now, I am tired of the grooves on the wall, and want to paint the room a different color. I have been reading about filling the grooves in with spackle and compound, then sanding it down. Can I still do this even with the pannelling already painted? Will it look okay?

  1. Yes, as long as you prime before you paint.

  2. I have some paneling painted as you describe.  I do not feel quite as strongly about the grooves.  Still, my dream is to have drywall team to redo one of the two rooms when it is financially feasible.  I was a first time buyer and made a lot of mistakes with appraising my home.  But, I resolved to remodel to what I wanted rather than what would suit me for the shorter term.  I like your idea; but, I would save for a professional team to come in to the bedroom.  I think you will be happier in the long term.  Please get a remodeling team that has excellent references checked out by you.  Of course, you want someone who will finish during your lifetime!   I almost want to say "go ahead."  But, gamble on a contractor. A very good contractor.  Not some roofers turned interior guys.  Check with older people in your community for names of reliable contractors.  But, I would not blame you for going with you plan as you have set forth.  Good luck.

  3. Maybe try wall paper on part of it..........The grooves will not show through the paper...

  4. I had the same problem in my room I used silicone to fill all the cracks then I painted the room looks really nice I will have pictures posted on my site in the near future

  5. We removed the paneling in two bedrooms, taped the unfinished drywall and plastered it.  Not a huge job, you just need to be real handy with Spackle.

Check behind one panel, hopefully they put drywall on the studs and didn't just nail the paneling on the studs.

  6. You can still fill in the grooves, but what would look best is some paintable wallpaper. It will give it some much needed texture. I have painted paneling, and the walls are too smooth. In my bathroom, I sprayed some orange peel texture, and it looks wonderful. However, it is very expensive. I have just a small wall, and it took three cans of texture at about $13 per can. If I did it again, I would go with the paintable wallpaper with texture.
