Painting the deck?

We just moved into a new house and the deck is all old and gray...how would I go about staining it? and how long does it take to dry? thank you!

  1. It is best to have the deck pressure washed first, but a good scrubbing will do. The next step is to decide how much maintenance you want to do. You can leave it alone and wash everytime it gets dirty, you can stain it every two years, or you can stain and protect the surface with a water proofer.

    Neither method is difficult. My deck is 17' x 20' and I refinish it by hand every two years. I use a roller with a broom handle to make the job go fast and each coat dries to the touch in 45 minutes or an hour.


  2. if the deck has never been sealed with stain, paint,or varnish.In other words still bare wood.Pressure wash and seal or paint when dry.decking oil gives a lovely finish .Whatever finish you choose,methods of application and drying times are written on the container.Good luck.
