Question:

Painting.....wood stain over brown spray paint?

I want a weathered look on our furniture. The furniture is metal and we've painted it brown. I wanted to go over it with a stain so that it looks weathered or at least no so flat with the brown spray paint.

Any suggestions?

  2. Maybe you could lightly sand places on the furniture so that some metal shows through to give it a weathered look. You could also paint a different brown on top and sand it down a little to reveal the other brown. Depending on what you're going for, paint is available that upon dring, begins to flake up and crack causing a weathered look. (crackle finish). I suppose you could go over the spray paint with stain but make sure that you don't use the same base. If the spray paint is latex based, use an oil based stain. If you use latex on top of latex you could cause the bottom layer of latex to dissolve. (I found this out trying to spraypaint something, and then cover it in a clear coat. the clear coat dissolved the layer underneath causing bubbles and peeling)
