  1. Wipe it down well with denatured alcohol found in any paint supply department. If you have access to a vibrating finish sander use a fine grit and rough up the surface with that.

If you want a really smooth high gloss finish use spray paint and when your painting start spraying next to the wood and then move your spray can all the way across and over to the other side before changing directions and going back. That way you will not get more paint in one area and you will get a better finish. Do the second coat in the opposite direction.

It you are not as worried about finish roll on a paint from a can. There are also gels and translucent all in one products that you might like. Go to the paint store or department and check out all the things available now. Paints have changed a lot and more is available, unfortunately it doesn't stick as well as it used to nor is it as durable in many states because they are passing laws to get rid of oil based products in some states.

  2. If the bed is wood and it has ever had any kind of wood dusting/cleaning products, you might not be able to paint it.  I've had trouble with a corner shelf that I tried to paint and found out that Pledge was used on it.  You will, however, maybe be able to get past this if you sand the surface really well.  Spray paint would work, but you have to be really careful with it because if you don't do it right, you will have runs in the paint.  I would use a can of paint and a roller if possible.  You can find a 3" roller setup at almost any harware store, even Wal-mart.  Good Luck!

  3. I painted an older wooden bed once..it had already been painted several times so I had to sand it down alot. Either way, you should sand the surface first.  I used leftover paint in a can that i had and brushed it on.  Just don't use a paint that is glossy.  If you can do it outside, spray paint would do the trick.  Although, i think you're cheapest bet is to just get a can and brush it on.  Spray paint can get expensive and my hands actually hurt from all the spraying!
