Pakistan Cricket Board and the Prospects of Women Curators in Pakistan
The Pakistan Cricket Board offered a five-month long course for training curators with the collaboration of Sindh Sports Ministry’s Youth Development Programme. This was the first time in the history of Pakistan that such a course
had been launched.
A total of nine participants took part in the course, out of which five were women. The chief curator of the National Stadium Ehsaan Arain has showed his complete satisfaction at the performance of the recruits. He said, “It’s
a great opportunity for these individuals as there is a dearth of good field curators in Pakistan, I had to train nine participants and I’m glad that all five women were great. They worked harder and now that we have women cricketers doing well in international
tournaments like the Asian Games, there is certainly place for women curators in Pakistan.” Arain believes that women have a great future as curators internationally and domestically.
The participants helped the chief curator in preparing the pitch for the Quaid-e-Azam trophy, and the women were equally good as their male colleagues in this task.
Many women participants are happy due to the fact that this is the first time in the country’s history that the Pakistan Cricket Board will have the option of hiring lady curators for national and international matches.
The Director Operations, Pakistan Cricket Board Zakir Khan said that the hiring of the participants will be based on their ranking. However, the Sindh Sports Ministry is planning to hire them for Karachi irrespective of their rankings.
In a conservative society such as Pakistan, this is a gigantic leap for the ladies, because their participation in many jobs is still considered as a social taboo. But times in Pakistan are gradually changing and now women have
a great opportunity to show their mettle in this field.
There are not many qualified curators in Pakistan and perhaps this is the main reason for the slow and dead pitches in the country. The participants also emphasized on the need for having more qualified curators in the country.
A female trainee Nayab Malik had this to say regarding the matter of qualification and social taboos: “Qualification really matters. I’m not saying our male counterparts are any less capable. Initially the fields were prepared
by labourers without any professional curator’s supervision but now Arain and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Agha-Zahid-c42277 are the only qualified curators in Pakistan,” she went on to say, “When I tell people that I want to prepare cricket pitches they laugh at me but I know that there is
a scope for women curators.”
Women in Pakistan have been encouraged by the brilliant performance of their women’s cricket team in the Asian Games, where the ladies managed to win a Gold medal for the country. This is the first ever gold medal won by any women’s
team from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 in any sport.
While the men’s cricket team was getting all the focus in the Asian games, it was the women who mesmerized the country with an unexpected win in the final. The cricket team has been receiving praise from everyone in the country;
the government has given cash prizes to the gold medallists and congratulations are still pouring in. This win will help lift women’s sport in Pakistan to a great level and after almost 64 years, the women of Pakistan have finally managed to (im)print their
names in international sports.
