Pakistan lost to the minnows in the semi-finals, which saw the favourite team of the tournament getting knocked out by the weakest outfit. Afghanistan, with this 22-run victory, managed to cruise into the final.
An official of the PCB said, “We interviewed all the concerned people and we found no evidence or suggestion that anything untoward happened in that match.”
Many people in Pakistan were left flabbergasted after this defeat which came quite unexpectedly.
Following the defeat, many in Pakistan alleged the involvement of some sort of foul play and among them was the chief of Eleven Star, an Islamabad based cricket club, Javed http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sadiq-Mohammad-c87843
and skipper Khalid Latif of losing to Afghanistan on purpose.
Khan alleged Khalid Latif of having very close ties with the Afghan coach http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Rashid-Latif-c84084, the former Pakistan wicketkeeper. Khan wrote a formal letter to the PCB, accusing captain Khalid Latif of deliberately not batting to the required
run rate, and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Azeem-Ghumman-c1112 of missing many balls. He requested the PCB to look into the possibility of match-fixing in the fixture between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
The PCB was quick to respond to Khan’s letter and requested the cricket club owner to provide any sort of evidence of match-fixing that he may have.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Khalid-Latif-c71261, who led the team in the 2010 Asiad, categorically rebuffed the accusations levelled by Javed Ali Khan, and clarified that his relationship with Rashid Latif had nothing to do with the defeat the team suffered by the
Afghan team.
Rashid Latif also rejected the possibility of any match-fixing in the clash between the two teams. Latif maintained that his boys won the match fair and square and pledged that his team could defeat the same Pakistan squad again
in a rematch.
This was the first time that the Asian games were featuring a cricket event and with India’s absence, it was assumed that Pakistan would easily take the gold.
