Pakistan Cricket Board to mellow down towards Zulqarnain Haider
The http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 Cricket Board has decided not to take any further action against the runaway wicketkeeper Zulqarnain Haider before the British government’s decision on his asylum request.
An official in the PCB said, “We immediately suspended his contract on disciplinary grounds but we don't want to do anything more until we know what happens to his application.”
Haider had requested the British government to give him asylum in England because he felt that his life may have a serious threat if he ever decides to go back to Pakistan.
PCB has been criticised for being lenient with the former wicketkeeper and not choosing to take swift action against him.
However, Subhan Ahmed (PCB, COO), who was a member of the fact-finding committee charged with the responsibility of investigating the events leading to Hairder’s desertion, said, “We don't want to jeopardise his case by doing anything, It is a complicated
case and some things are still not clear, although we had three discussions with Zulqarnain while investigating this matter.”
Last week, the fact-finding committee consisting of Subhan, Intikhab Alam (team manager) and Khawaja Najam (security manager) submitted its report to the PCB, which failed to give any solid reasons behind Haider’s actions in the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/United-Arab-Emirates-c3033. The
trio requested the PCB in their report to send Haider a letter inquiring him about all the events which persuaded him to take the drastic step of leaving his team behind and running off to the United Kingdom.
The report has termed Haider as a weak person who easily believes anything which is said to him. Haider reacted strongly to these observations made by the committee and threatened to sue the PCB for maligning his character. However, till now no action has
been taken by the asylum seeking wicketkeeper against the PCB.
In November this year, Haider left his team which was playing against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757 in the UAE and ran away to England just before the fifth ODI of the series. Initially, no one had any clue about the reasons behind the young wicketkeeper’s actions but later
he himself held a press conference in a hotel in England where he disclosed that he had been getting life threats from a bookie who wanted him to lose matches in the series.
Later, his family also started receiving threat calls when he announced that he would be naming many people involved in match-fixing. According to Haider’s claims, he pledged to disclose everything within five days. But it never happened and fans are still
waiting for the names to come out which he had promised to reveal.
