Pakistan Cricket: http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Davenell-Frederick-Whatmore-c52571 - A new beginning for Pakistan
In cricket, perhaps one of the most important posts is that of the team head coach as he is the driving force behind a well organized strategy that can either make or break a team.
However, in country likes Pakistan and India, players have always had more power and this power at teams has also been abused, leading to the ouster of many coaches in the past.
And while every cricket board claims to have stamped out player power, the reality is as clear as sun shine on a clear day that in Pakistan, player power still exists and if one wishes to coach the national team he needs to be wary of the sentiments of the
players.
Recently, Dav Whatmore, an Australian born former cricketer was names as the coach of the national team, and with his experience of coaching teams from Sri Lanka and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bangladesh-c747 he is perhaps the best man for the job as he knows how things run in the subcontinent
when it comes to cricket.
Nevertheless, players in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka do not hold the power which Pakistan and Indian players enjoy, thus it will be interesting to see how 58-year-old Australian chalks out his latest stint.
So far it has been a joyride for Whatmore in his first assignment as coach, Pakistan went on to lift the Asia Cup, where the Men in Green were up against teams from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 and Bangladesh.
However, it is time his real Test will be against the likes of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757, the two teams against whom Pakistan has not fared well in recent history.
Keeping results aside, Whatmore needs to avoid a situation of confrontation with senior players which will surely lead to his doom.
His predecessor http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Shahid-Afridi-c2482.
Initially, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 Cricket Board (PCB) refused to submit to player power and as a protest Afridi retired to international cricket, however, later it was Waqar who quit his job which saw the return of Afridi in the national team.
This is testament to the fact that even the PCB, cannot ignore senior players and then again why would a cricket board want to ignore players who are performing as there Afridi without a shadow of doubt is a major force in the international cricket and should
play till the day he himself hangs his boots.
The role of the coach, however, should not be ignored and should have his say in the selection process, keeping the national team skipper in loop.
Whatmore is certainly a great thing for Pakistan and with his cricketing insight he should be able to bring great fortunes to the country.
The man is known to identify great talent which would later be the steering force of the national team.
Pakistan needs to give Whatmore some space and allow him to scan through raw talent and identify potential super star of the future, instead of limiting him to work with the players already in the national team.
