Pakistan Premier League – Something more than just a fancy dream
With Pakistan seeking to launch its own version of domestic cricket on the footings of the lucrative Indian Premier League (IPL), the Pakistan Cricket Board, needs to weigh in all the pros and cons before jumping in such venture, which would promote Pakistan
cricket as a brand in the outside world.
Firstly, Pakistan needs to understand that an IPL type of domestic cricket will not opens the door for resumption of international cricket like a magic wand, as the situation is totally different when a few players from other countries are visiting you as
opposed to a whole contingent of around 20 foreign members touring the country.
Second, with three Pakistani players becoming the first in the history of the game to be convicted of corruption, there is a prospect of spot and match-fixing in Pakistan Premier League (PPL) which will bring more harm than good to the already tattered reputation
of the PCB.
The reason why http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 did not have to worry about spot-fixing issues is the fact that their players did not get busted in recent history and since we are victims of a short term memory, we often forget that India has had a shady past regarding match-fixing
where they had players like former skipper, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mohammad-Azharuddin-c76823 found guilty of involvement in fixing games.
However, that is in the past and since then Indian players have not been caught, whereas Pakistan has failed to curb corruption and perhaps it is finally time to put an end to this menace and for that the PCB should not wait or monitor players playing in
the national team but grab hold of the culprits while they are still playing in the domestic circuit.
Without excluding the possibility of corruption in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 Premier League (PPL), an event on the footings of the IPL will be looked at with suspicions by the international community.
The country is desperately seeking the resumption of international cricket, which came to a dramatic halt after a failed terrorist attack on the visiting team from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 in 2009 in the city of Lahore.
Luckily for Pakistan, Sri Lankan lives were saved, but the series was abruptly ended, and since then international cricket has been a myth than anything else for local Pakistani.
On the other hand, since the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mumbai-c820 attacks in 2009, India has decided to exclude players from Pakistan which has further forced Pakistan to seriously consider launching their own version of a lucrative domestic league in order to attract foreign players.
With all the hype surrounding the issue, it yet remains to be seen if Pakistan would actually go for such a venture, however, PCB’s new boss Zaka http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ashraf-c46397 is seriously considering all options and looks determined to launch the PPL during his tenure.
Speaking on the prospects of a Pakistani version of IPL, a PCB official said, “We are dead serious about having our own PPL but we have to first study the modalities and feasibility of having such an event which would not be possible without input and expertise
from a established company.”
With the stage set for PPL, all Pakistan now has to do is enhance their security mechanism and create a better watchdog within the country to keep an eye on the players to avoid any sort of corruption.
