Pakistan beat Ireland 3-2 in 2011 PTT-EGAT Snooker World Cup – Snooker news
Pakistan have put a shock on the cards by defeating the Republic of Ireland by a frame score of 3-2 in the 2011 PTT-EGAT Snooker World Cup.
This event is being staged in Bangkok, Thailand.
The Pakistani team, which consisted of Shahid Aftab and Muhammad Shahid, held their nerves and produced high standards of game to see off the Irish team, consisting of Fergal O’Brien and the former 1997 World Champion, Ken Doherty.
The Irish players, who were heavy favourites for the match, knocked in two classy century breaks of 111 and 101. However, these breaks were not enough, as the Pakistanis came far superior in other frames in terms of safety and were able to win the match with a top break of just 25.
The Darling of Dublin, Doherty shared his feeling with the media after the match. He stated he and O’Brien were very disappointed with their defeat, as they knocked in two century breaks.
While speaking on his inclusion, he said, “We're very disappointed to lose but it's amazing that we both made a century break each but lost the match 3-2.”
The 2011 Snooker World Cup, which has returned to the scene after a 15-year gap, is featuring pairs who will compete in five one-frame series. Therefore, Doherty reckons there will be more surprises ahead to see.
“There will be a lot of shocks and surprises and it's very hard to get into rhythm, especially with the doubles match,” added Doherty.
In the end, Doherty admired the Pakistani team and said India and Pakistan both have a tradition of producing good players. Moreover, he added the way Sajjad and Shahid have played, people will come to know they were not that easy to beat with the passage of time.
“Pakistan and India always have good cueists and they have a tradition of producing good players over the years. They will be a test for any of the other teams in our group so it won't be as straight forward as it looks,” added Doherty.
