In a sharp development in Pakistan cricket, the country’s head coach, Dave Whatmore, has conveyed to the selectors that he wants to see the name of Misbah-ul-Haq in the 30 probables for the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 World Twenty20.
According to sources, Whatmore believes Misbah can still be an asset for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 in the T20 games and should not be completely discarded.
Whatmore’s decision to back Haq was confirmed by a PCB source, which on the condition of anonymity said, “Whatmore has requested the selectors from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 to include Misbah's name in the T20 World Cup preliminary squad that has to be sent to the ICC this week."
Pakistan, who are currently touring Sri Lanka, where after losing the five-match ODI series - they are aiming to win the second Test to level the series after they failed in the first Test - have their work cut out for them and their coach, who has immense experience in dealing with teams from Asia as he is experimenting by introducing new players and giving the old pros another chance to salvage their pride.
Whatmore’s decision to stand behind Haq has come just weeks after the Pakistan selection committee relieved Haq from the captaincy of the T20 team and replaced him with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mohammad-Hafeez-c76898, after which he was also discarded from the squad in a bid to give younger guys a chance to represent the country.
However, sources within the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) have revealed that most of the selectors are not willing to give Misbah another chance in the 20-over game and believe it is time to look forward.
According to the PCB sources, Misbah had reacted strongly when he was informed by the selection committee about his ouster from the T20 team.
"Misbah had reacted strongly at the meeting in which he was told about his ouster, insisting that he was being treated unfairly and the selectors should give him one good reason for dropping," said the source.
The PCB official further added, “Misbah's contention was that he had accepted charge of the team in all three formats at a tough time and brought the team together and also produced results." He therefore insisted that there was no justification for his ouster from any format.
Pakistan are to play a series of three T20s against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 next month, before which they need to have a settled T20 outfit.
