Pakistan cricket news: Mohammad Aamir might escape with a 2-year ban over spot fixing case
Pakistan’s young and potentially next big thing Mohammad Aamir might escape a harsher punishment over the spot-fixing case as a source claims he is likely to face a 2-year ban in next month’s hearing in Doha.
Former Test captain Salman Butt is also likely to face a 7-year ban in an upcoming hearing of the International Cricket Council (ICC) Independent tribunal in Doha, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Qatar-c2986 early next year.
A well placed source in the ICC claimed that the way the case is being handled along with the frequent changes in his legal team, Butt will not be able to plead his case affectively.
The former Test captain was suspended by the ICC along with Pakistani fast bowlers Mohammad Asif and Aamir over spot fixing allegations. The suspended players will be hearing their case in the ICC’s anti-corruption tribunal on January 6th, 2011.
The source also claimed that the ICC Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) has prepared a “long list of evidences” against Butt that will likely over-turn his case that might not go in his favour. The source also stated that the ICC will most probably highlight the
fact that Butt was the “captain and was responsible for the conduct of the team,” referring to the summer tour of England when the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 cricket was marred by British tabloid claims over spot-fixing.
The fact that Butt was the leading man in the case has already tangled himself in producing different versions of the money found in his hotel room. The http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Scotland-c756 Yard who were investigating the case found banknotes and £150,000 cash in his hotel room and
Butt claimed at that time he brought the money for his sister’s wedding. He changed his statement in an interview to Sky Sports saying the money was provided by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) as an allowance. He switched his statement again claiming the
money found in the room was actually given to him by an Ice-cream parlour that he inaugurated.
“Right now Butt only has Yasin Patel, a lawyer of Indian origin in London representing him and representing the best chance of getting the minimum punishment for him,” the source remarked.
Asif and Aamir might just escape with a 2-year ban due to the evidences that points towards the former captain as apparently “ordering the bowlers to deliberately bowl no- balls” and are considered to be having a “more cooperative and better relation with
the ICC’s ACU”, the source claimed.
