The hosts ran through the Pakistani batting line-up on a pitch that was offering the bowlers lateral movement for a paltry 124. Tim Southee was the wrecker in chief running through the batsmen with a brilliant haul of 5/33 from 9.3 overs.
Earlier in the day, Pakistani captain Shahid Afridi won the toss and opted to bat first. The tourists were rocked early and hardly had any time to recover against a disciplined attack. It seems that the arrival of South African pace legend Allan Donald has
had an immediate impact on the fortunes of the New Zealand pacers.
Tim Southee started the rut as early as in the fourth over of the innings when he had Mohammad Hafeez snapped behind the stumps by wicket-keeper Brendon McCullum.
Kamran Akmal who was recalled into the team after getting clearance from the Pakistan Cricket Board perished to a loose shot to Southee when Jessie Ryder held a fine catch at the point region.
Asad Shafiq also perished to Southee. The right-hander was trapped lbw by the bowler for only 4 runs.
The body blow for the tourists was the demise of their most experienced batsman Younis Khan. The right-hander was held by McCullum off Hamish Bennett for 24 runs.
The reckless batting continued as Umar Akmal perished next ball. The mercurial right-hander was caught by Ross http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Taylor-c92915 in the slips fending a short ball which he could have easily left.
Captain http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Shahid-Afridi-c2482 curbed his natural instincts in his 15-run knock; however he was undone by a good one by Southee with McCullum taking another catch.
Abdul Razzaq also went back without doing any damage when he gave McCullum another catch behind the stumps off Jacob Oram’s bowling.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Misbah-ul-Haq-c1972 continued his good run with the bat and posted a fighting half-century but found little support from the other end.
He eventually found another unique way of getting dismissed when he flicked the ball onto the stumps while attempting to clear the short fine-leg fielder and became Southee’s fifth victim of the day.
The hosts are off to a rollicking start, they need a mere 75 runs after the interval and have all 10 wickets in their kitty.
