Pakistan may earn $17 million without hosting WC matches
Pakistan may not be hosting any match of the 2011 World Cup after the terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in 2009 in Lahore, but the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will still receive between $15 and $17 million from the tournament.
Sources within the PCB have confirmed that the International Cricket Council (ICC) along with the three host countries of the 2011 World Cup – http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 – has assured Pakistan that it will receive a share of the hosting fees, sponsorship
and cricket revenue earnings from the matches it was supposed to host.
Although Pakistan was supposed to host 14 matches of the World Cup including one of the semi-finals, the ICC was forced to reverse its decision due to security concerns, and transferred the matches to other three countries. India was awarded eight of Pakistan’s
matches, while Sri Lanka will host four games and Bangladesh two.
It was really a great shock not only for the PCB, but for Pakistani team and its fans as well. The terrorism incident did not only become a hindrance for cricket but also for other sports in Pakistan, after seven Sri Lankan players were injured.
The source said, “But despite the disappointment of not being part of the World Cup as hosts, Pakistan has been reassured it would get the hosting fees of the 14 matches plus part of the sponsorship and ticket sale revenues earned from these matches wherever
they are hosted.”
In the recent meeting of the ICC Executive Board, ICC President Sharad Pawar assured PCB Chairman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ijaz-Butt-c64128 about the financial compensation for Pakistan.
The decision of the ICC to move World Cup matches away from Pakistan provoked a strong reaction from the PCB and it had started legal proceedings against ICC. However both sides later reached an agreement regarding the payment of hosting fees and compensation.
Even though the ICC’s decision was a set back for Pakistan, the PCB was not prepared to allow hosting rights to be taken from them so easily. As a result of those efforts, the board will not only receive the $10.5 million hosting fees, rather other countries
will have to pay the additional compensation to the PCB for losing their hosting rights.
Other than the fact that Pakistan will receive compensation without hosting the World Cup, there is also another positive side to the ICC’s announcement for Pakistan. Secondly Pakistan will not have to spend heavily on security measures because of the poor
state of security in the country. It would have been a really huge responsibility for Pakistan to ensure the safety all the participating teams.
Besides, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754, the UAE, and England over the last two years.
The World Cup will commence on 19 February, 2011 and total of 14 teams will take part in it.
