Following a Test series victory after almost two years, Sri Lanka’s skipper, Mahela Jayawardene is delighted with his team’s performance against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 and praised the young guys who performed well under trying circumstances.
The Islanders did not win a single Test series since Muttiah Muralitharan’s retirement in 2010. However, Jayawardene’s men have turned the tables and now they will look to carry on with the same momentum in future.
The last two matches of the series against Pakistan ended without a result, after the home team’s emphatic victory in the series-opener at Galle.
Pakistan set up a target of 270 runs on the last day of the match. The home side was off to a sublime start through young opening batsman, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/LD-Chandimal-c1831, but failed to carry on with the same momentum after his dismissal. Consequently, no result was possible.
The Sri Lankan captain expressed during the presentation ceremony that his team lost hope of chasing down the total after Chandimal’s dismissal. However, the middle-order batsman praised the young guns for delivering the goods under pressure situations in
the series.
“We fought in tough situations, guys performed under pressure. When we came into the last hour, we realised it was not within our reach as we had lost a couple of wickets,” Jayawardene said. “Chandimal's wicket was very crucial, we shut shop after that,
but obviously till then, the intent was to win the match. It was a very hard series for us.”
Even after beating the visitors, Jayawardene was not ready to take anything away from the Green Shirts and said that with such a potent bowling attack, Pakistan deserve to be placed higher in the Test rankings.
"Given the kind of armoury Pakistan have, they should be ranked higher in the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 rankings. Everyone should take a lot of credit for the hard work [for the series win]," he added.
Sri Lanka’s next assignment starts on July 21st as they will play five One Day Internationals and a T20 fixture against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 at home, providing great preparation for both the teams ahead of the ICC World T20 2012.
