The stand-in skipper of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758, which got underway at Galle on Friday, June 22.
"We were a bit unlucky," said Hafeez while speaking to media reporters after the Islanders reached 300 for 2 at stumps on Day one, courtesy centuries from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/TM-Dilshan-c2691.
"The conditions were suitable for spinners...We are very happy we restricted them to 300," he added further.
Though the conditions were conducive for spinners, Pakistan's slow bowlers struggled for breakthroughs, as Kumar Sangakkara went on to share two century stands with Tillakaratne Dilshan (124 runs for second wicket) and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/DPMD-Jayawardene-c1397
(113 not out for third wicket). At stumps, the experienced Sanga was unbeaten on 111 with skipper Mahela Jayawardene not out on 55.
Whilst crediting Sangakkara (not out 111) and Dilshan (101) for Sri Lanka’s comfortable position at the end of day one, Hafeez, captaining for the first time in a Test match, said that a quick outfield also helped the hosts score
at a quick pace. This was Dilshan’s first Test century in a year.
"There were escapes where we could have got him (Sangakkara),” said the 31-year-old all-rounder. “We have some plans against him and we'll try them out tomorrow,” he added further.
Hafeez termed spearhead pacer http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Umar-Gul-c94604 unlucky for failing to claim even a single wicket on the opening day.
"Gul was unlucky but this is how the game is played," Hafeez said. "We have to work hard tomorrow. We have to think of ways to get them out," he added further.
Gul could have removed http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ian-James-Gould-c63876 failed to detect a narrow inside edge. It is pertinent to mention here that Decision Review System (DRS) is not being used in the ongoing Pakistan-Sri
Lanka series.
Asked if DRS would have helped them, the Pakistan skipper said, "There are some inconsistencies in the use of DRS. This series does not have DRS so we are not complaining."
