http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 at Dubai in a dominating position of 311 runs for the loss of 3 wickets on Friday.
At stumps, Jacques Kallis was unbeaten on 53 with night watchman Paul Harris on nought.
Earlier in the day, South African captain Graeme Smith won the toss and decided to bat first on a wicket which looked pretty flat. However, the two Pakistani quicks, Umar Gul and Wahab Riaz swung the ball both ways brilliantly.
Umar Gul got South African opener Alviro Petersen caught behind cleanly by Adnan Akmal, but was left disappointed when umpire Daryl Harper turned down the appeal. Replays suggested a healthy edge.
But once the shine on the new ball was gone, South African openers Peterson and Smith piled on the runs. Peterson was the first to go after Younis Khan pulled off a stunner with 153 runs on the board.
Smith continued to score in a dominating fashion. Soon after he scored his 100, he was dismissed by Wahab Riaz to leave South Africa at 190 runs for the loss of two wickets.
But Hashim Amla and Jacques Kallis partnered together to pile on more misery for the bowlers. Both looked completely unflustered to any pressure applied by the Pakistan captain http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Misbah-ul-Haq-c1972.
Amla however, was dismissed for 80 runs by Wahab Riaz after he played away from his body.
Play was finally called off with South Africa well placed at 311 runs for the loss of 3 wickets.
It was a tough day for the bowlers but the Pakistanis will hope they could get some swing early in the day and try to restrict South Africa to a competitive total.
