Pakistani boxer Mohammad Waseem upset for not qualifying for the Olympics – Boxing News
Pakistani boxer Mohammad Waseem finds himself amidst dark clouds after not being able to qualify for the Olympics. According to Waseem, he was confident and ready to but his luck did not play its part. He spoke to the media on Friday, yesterday, expressing
his sorrow over what happened to him in Astana.
Waseem lost in the quarter final to the 2009 World Championship silver medallist Nyambayar Tugstsogt from Mongolia with a score of 22-9. Waseem could have qualified for the Olympics only if he had defeated Nyambayar in the quarter final.
While talking to the media, disappointed Waseem accused judges of showing favouritism towards his opponent. He iterated, “Because the opponent had a good standing in the world boxing, he was favoured most of the times during the fight. If you watch the fight,
you will see that I played good boxing but could not get more points. I knew about the strength of my opponent, but I was confident that I would be able to beat him which ultimately I could not do so, and so my long-cherished Olympic dream was shattered.”
After returning to his hometown Islamabad, Pakistan, from Kazakhstan, the star boxer said, “I had not got any standard training, but I had worked extremely hard. Unluckily I failed to qualify for the London Olympics.”
On the other hand, Abdul Majeed Brohi, Pakistani coach, said that if any boxer during the semi-finals is found guilty of consuming drugs then probably Waseem might get another chance. He added that all the boxers have already undergone drug tests prior to
the initiation of the competition, however if another dope test is regulated then Waseem might have a chance.
The coach also went onto support Waseem’s accusation against the judges saying that indeed Waseem’s opponent was getting excessive favour from the judges. He further said that Waseem was well trained and his opponent looked meagre to him, but he managed
to make a win due to the irregularities by the judges. The coach further said that Waseem has a bright future ahead of him and he needs to focus on his boxing skills for now.
