Pakistani domestic cricket performances and national team selection
It is obvious that a player gets selected to play for his team on the basis of his quality performances in domestic cricket. This is a criteria followed all around the world.
It is the competitiveness that a country’s domestic’s structure bears. Domestic structures around the world have been made transparent. The true indication of a domestic structure is the number of quality players that it can produce.
In Australia, the Shield cricket comprises of six state teams. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 in Test cricket. A batsman who
scores runs against them, on a fast bouncy wicket, that is in Australia should be considered for the future. The batsman has proved himself against a quality attack.
In Pakistan, everybody knows the condition of the domestic circuit. They play on dead docile wickets. Bowlers have to toil hard. Batsmen in domestic cricket have banked on these lifeless pitches. If a batsman scores a double hundred in a domestic structure
against a weak bowling attack, he shouldn’t be considered on the basis of his sole performance.
There should a pattern on how to select these players. Against which attack a batsman has fared. Was it against Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif? What was the quality of wicket, he scored runs on.
There have been examples in the past, a batsman scores many runs in domestic cricket, but is unable to do justice at the international level. Shafiq Ahmed, mainly known as http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Shafiq-c89281 papa has a terrific domestic record. Whenever, he came to bat, he scored big
runs. He has almost 20,000 runs in domestic circuit at an average of almost 50. But whenever, he has been given a chance at the international level, he has struggled to make an impact. In his short Test career he played only 6 Test matches, failing to score
100 runs in those matches.
Currently, Mohammad Hafeez and Mohammad Sami are prime examples. Hafeez, always scores runs in domestic cricket, but has always failed to make his name at the international level. He averages 34 in List A cricket, but 20 in ODI cricket in about 53 matches
with an unacceptable strike rate of 59.
Mohammad Sami came on the scene as a promising pace bowler. He took 5 wickets on debut, since then he has struggled. He always performs well in domestic cricket, but fails to show his promise in international cricket. He is unable to produce his domestic
average of 30 on the international cricket arena. Sami averages 50 in Test cricket.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Javed-Miandad-c66580 faced Wasim
Akram and quickly saw his potential. He was swinging the ball both ways at pace, and was troubling the master batsman. Javed called Imran to have a look at the youngster. Imran discovered his talent and inducted Wasim into the team.
Inzamam, was called into the nets by Imran to face Wasim and Waqar to show his potential. He was having no fear, while facing the two W’s. Imran Khan inducted him into the team. He rates Inzamam, as the best player against pace bowling of his era.
Imran, while watching a domestic match in 1988, saw a bowler, who went for over 20 runs in a single over, but the boy had pace. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Imran-c64193 decided to pick him. Later on, he became the great Waqar Younis.
The selectors should look at the above examples and learn how to develop their eye for talent. Some players might have the numbers in domestic cricket to warrant selection for the national squad but may fail to perform in the international arena. On the
other hand, some of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755’s most successful cricketers were selected after simply being observed and groomed by senior players.
Pakistan cricket team selectors and senior cricket players may have work more closely together to select and groom a successful Pakistani cricket squad.
