Pakistani tennis star, Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi to get engaged next month – Tennis News
Pakistan’s top tennis player Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi is getting engaged to Faha Makhdum, a UK resident. The 31-year-old has a huge fan following in his home country and the ace tennis player has become a heart throb of thousand of
girls in Pakistan after his recent success in tennis world.
Makhdum lives in the town of Ipswich, Suffolk, England. She has done BSc Hons in Psychology from the University of Essex and MSc in Therapeutic Counselling (BACP accredited). She has worked for the Pakistani High Commissioner in
England and also practised as a trainee counsellor for Stepping Stones East in 2010.
Qureshi attained a super star status in Pakistan after he became the first tennis player from the South Asian country to feature in a grand slam title match. The Lahore resident reached the final of the men’s doubles event, partnering
Rohan Bopanna of India and mixed doubles event, partnering Kveta Peschke of Czech Republic at the US Open in 2010. Although, Qureshi lost both finals but he won the heart of millions of people around the world with his post match speech.
"I want to say something on behalf of all Pakistanis. Every time I come here, there's a wrong perception about the people of Pakistan. They are very friendly, very loving people. We want peace in this world as much as you guys”,
said Qureshi.
After this US Open episode, Qureshi has become a house hold name in Pakistan. At the moment, he is the only sports super star in his home country who is not a cricketer. With his rising popularity, the six feet tall is fast becoming
the face of many top brands in Pakistan. He has already done television commercials for PEPSI, Close up and Clear.
Qureshi had been appointed as the ambassador of goodwill by the United Nations Development Program in 2010. He is also a two time recipient of Arthur Ashe Humanitarian award. He received the coveted award for the first time in
2002, when he partnered Amir Hadad of Israel at the Wimbledon and US Open. Last year, he received it again along with Bopanna for delivering the peace message of “Stop War, Start Tennis”.
Qureshi’s engagement is scheduled in the in the month of July, 2011. The date is not yet finalised but the family has already decided that only relatives and close friends will be invited to attend the ceremony.
