Pakistan’s suspended players Mohammad Amir, Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif will leave for Doha, Qatar today to hear the verdict of their spot-fixing case. Asif will fly from London to Qatar because he is currently staying in England.
The verdict will decide the future of the players in international cricket. In January, the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) anti-corruption tribunal held a six-day hearing of the spot-fixing case, beginning from the 6th of
January and ending on the 11th.
The lawyers of the players were given ample opportunity to defend their clients and it was on the request of Amir’s lawyer http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Shahid-c89347 Karim that the anti-corruption tribunal decided to postpone the announcement of the verdict till
the 5th of this month. The tribunal was headed by Michael Beloff QC. Beloff is expected to make the verdict public on Saturday at a press conference in Doha.
When Amir’s lawyer was asked about the upcoming crucial verdict, he said, “We have no comments to make on the verdict at this stage because we don't know what the decision is going to come from the tribunal."
When asked what his next move would be if the verdict came against his client, he responded by saying, “The rules stipulate that if the players are not happy with the verdict against them they can approach the Court of Arbitration
of Sports and appeal the verdicts of the tribunal and that option is always available to us."
However, last month, he hoped of having the verdict in favour of his client and believed that a delay in announcement of the verdict would give the members of the tribunal enough time to reconsider all options. He was of the opinion
that the delay would benefit Amir.
According to well-informed sources, there is a chance that the three players will get different penalties respectively. According to reports, former captain Butt and pacer Asif may get a life ban while Amir, because of his age,
may escape a tough punishment.
Reports by the media suggest that ICC is in no mood to be lenient with the players if evidence suggests that they are in fact guilty. Cricket’s governing body wants to eradicate the menace of match-fixing and spot-fixing even if
it means banning international players from the sport for life.
Keeping this in view, the players have a tough day to face when they come in front of the tribunal to hear the verdict which will define their future in the world of cricket.
