Palace stun Norwich, Boothroyd strikes late for Cardiff
The Championship continued to adhere to its unpredictable nature last night, as Crystal Palace, who were without an away win or an away goal, defeated third-placed Norwich 2-1 at Carrow Road.
Norwich had taken an early lead through their talisman Grant Holt in the first half, but a spirited second-half performance saw Julian Bennett and Anthony Gardner both score from set-pieces to leave the Eagles supporters flying high.
Cardiff kept up the chase on league leaders QPR by grinding out a 2-1 win against Coventry, the gap at the top is now down to just two points. Ben Turner brought down Michael Chopra in the area with only two minutes gone and Peter Wittingham put the visitors ahead from the spot. Gary McSheffrey levelled for the Sky Blues but Jay Boothroyd (pictured right) struck late on, for his ninth of the season, to register Cardiff’s eighth win of the season.
QPR also have won eight matches this season but they failed to win for the second game running as they were held to their second goalless draw of the week, this time with Swansea City. Paddy Kenny was the hero for the west-Londoners, as he saved a penalty from David Cotterill mid-way through the first half.
Keith Millen lifted some pressure of his shoulders as his Bristol City side beat Reading 1-0 at Ashton Gate, it wasn’t enough to lift them off the bottom of the table but it is a step in a right direction for the Robins.
Watford’s fantastic start to the season goes on after they beat Ipswich 2-1, a result which lifts Malky Mackay’s side up to third in the table. Stephen McGinn opened the scoring for the hosts and 19-year-old Marvin Sordell then struck his sixth league goal of the season to double the lead. David Norris headed in for the visitors after the break but Watford held on despite a late onslaught from Roy Keane’s men.
