What may you see in a fossil that would indicate a mass extinction? What would you see if the mass extinction was causes by an explosion?

Thanks

  1. nothing spectacular. The stillness in the fossills or the way that the fossils were discovered. Just a guess, in a mass explosion, some of the remains would be scattered. In a drought or a lack of food, the remains would or could be in a lying down position. Easier to excavate in a find.

  2. will if it was a mass explosion you would see that it obviously has fractured bones, but I'm guessing what you are trying to find out if a meteoroid killed the dinosaurs and i am sorry but that is a question that is still being questioned.

  3. You don't see indications of mass extinctions in a fossil.  Rather, the relatively sudden disappearances of various groups of fossil organisms at much the same time provide indications of mass extinctions in some cases.

You don't get indications of explosions in fossils either.  There are indications of a large meteorite impact about 65 million years ago, and that's probably linked to a mass extinction, at least in part.  Traces include a 200km diameter crater, shocked quartz resulting from the energy released by the impact, an unusually high amount of iridium in a narrow layer so far found at over 100 localities around the world, and sot deposits brought about by forest fires, again, on a global basis.
