  1. Yeah, the cheesy-*** loser had these weird columns from like a set of an old movie or something.

    McCain08

  2. You can see his set in this YouTube video. The "columns" was a big pre-speech target for right wings attack on his hubris and cockyness and has become a central message of how he's out of touch and seeking a fantastical coronation more than humility and a true understanding of what the job entails.

  3. Well, Obama had to make the setup to match his 'celebrity' image, so what do you expect??  It wouldn't surprise me that he used taxpayer's money to buy them!!

  4. Those "Greek Columns" were evocative of many buildings in Washington, DC.  Yes, the Capitol (where he works now) and the White House (where he's headed) are two prominent examples.  There's obviously some symbolism there, along with the comparison to Kennedy's acceptance speech at the LA Colosseum.  But the most significant thing being evoked by the set of his acceptance speech was the Lincoln Memorial.  This is specifically in recognition of the fact that the first Black man accepted the nomination of a major party 45 years to the day after Martin Luther King Jr. gave his "I have a dream" speech in front of the Lincoln Memorial.

To me, Sarah Palin's snide remarks only reinforced the (hopefully untrue) stereotype of the ignorant Alaskan who would have no idea who MLK even is, let alone have any respect for the significance of either his or Obama's speeches.

And for the record, the set was not really very big in the context of the large venue where it was used.  In fact, after hearing reports about it, when I finally saw it I was really surprised by how small it was.  On TV, it looked nice and understated.  It's surprising to me how many of the respondents here clearly did not actually watch his speech.

  5. yes, he had foam columns that sort of framed a giant picture of his head.

  6. Yes he did. It was a simple way of saying that those Foam Greek Columns that he stood behind to make him look strong are just as fake as his speeches.

  7. Obama had a huge set for his acceptance speech, including styrofoam Greek columns.

The only thing missing from Obama's big night was a human sacrifice!  Unfortunately, he could not find an aborted baby to let die on stage next to the podium!

  9. Yes, they were a nice touch.

They are representative of the buildings in DC.

I guess Republicans are too ignorant to know that.

Palin is a criminal.  Her speech was just more Conservative jibberish that only other rich white people understand or care about.

    McCain is a liar.

Republicans are morally corrupt.  Seeing so many of them just makes me sad, sad that they are so ignorant.

  10. Yes, he had a huge costly theatrical set as his stage.

  11. Yes, very Post-Hollywood. A simulation of Caesar entering the halls of power in Rome. Here's what I thought of the speech:

It was wonderful! I thought as it started off that she might bomb, but she came roaring back. I expect to see a major bounce in the newest polls showing McCain/Palin surging ahead of the lackluster Dem ticket.

A son going to Iraq on 9/11, a husband who's a member of the United Steelworkers? Tell the Dems they can forget about Ohio and Michigan being in their column. Great job, Sarah. You remind me of the tough sheriff from the movie, "Fargo".

  12. The solid looking columns in the background of Obama's speech were much like his speech - impressive but full of fluff.

  13. During his acceptance speech, the set behind him resembled Greek columns according to some.

  14. The great American buildings in Washington D.C. are in the Classical style.   From Congress, to the Supreme Court, the White House, the Lincoln Memorial and the Jefferson Memorial..as well as part os the private homes of Washington and Jefferson.

I'm sad that more Americans don't recognise that the columns were a nod to that.   It wasn't a Greek temple.  If it was a temple of anything, it the temple of our democracy and republic, both of which were inspired by Greece and Republican Rome.

Also, 4 years ago, the Republican convention also had Greek columns.

  15. He had Styrofoam Greek columns I guess. I didn't pay attention to the surroundings because I was too busy listening to the lies coming out his mouth.

  16. Hahaha, move em back to the set, baby, cos you are gonna be thrown on the bridge to nowhere come November!

  17. Yes, big elaborate Greek columns.  He's a god, you know.

  18. He was simulating a scene from a Greek Colosseum that was the entire intention they spoke of it all over the news the day before his speech and his intention was to rise out of the floor like a greek god. Then give his speech .

  19. Yes the almighty one had greek columns.

  20. The media dubbed them "greek columns",the end posts housed two large screen TV's it was football field after all and 80,000 people without them you would of never seen who was on stage. But she forgot to mention that huh?So who is the candidate of no substance?Because that has nothing to do with the issues. If that's all you got you got no game.
