...  It's just the first time in forever that children of politicians are being brought into the spotlight. .. Not even close to "forever". When GWB was running for his first term, McCain appeared at a Republican fundraiser and made a joke about Chelsea Clinton being ugly, which the Repubs all got a good laugh out of. At that time, Chelsea was a teen and in no way involved in politics. Compare this to Palin, who is trotting her kids out in front of the camera then claiming the media is violating her privacy.

She did not, nor have I heard her complain about it. It's just the first time in forever that children of politicians are being brought into the spotlight. I guess it's just a sign that the Democrats are so thoroughly under-qualified that they have to result to personal attacks because a debate/comparison on policy/ethics wouldn't end well for them.

palin asked for the "off limits" because she doesn't want to face the fact that her abstinence stance didn't work, resulting in her unwed, pregnant daughter.

As far as republicans whining about "don't talk about the kids!" they appear to have forgotten all the trash the repubs talked about chelsea clinton.

It has ALWAYS been understood that you leave candidates' kids alone. And the ONLY hate bashes against Obama's family have been directly related to public statements made by Michelle. She injected herself into the political discourse, so that makes her fair game. But NO ONE has ever gone after their kids. Same goes for the Clintons. It was always hands-off Chelsea.
