Question:

Palm TX Quick Install...Please Help!!!!!

have a Palm TX handheld. I got it barely used and trust the person that sold it to me. I installed everything on my computer and I have a lot of applications that I want to put on it. I had a Zire 72 before and put these applications onto it. I add the files to the quick install and close the quick install window and everything. I then try to sync my handheld with the computer. The hotsync works fine and goes through everything. The problem is after the hotsync, the applications are still on the quick install list and still not on my Palm. I may just be forgetting to do something stupid because I haven't done it since my Zire 72 broke a few years ago. I don't know if it has anything to do with it, but sometimes it will say "Can't open the port" on my Palm screen after the Hotsync is finished. I am using the TX install disc and no data from the Zire 72 is on my computer. Any idea what is wrong or something I maybe didn't turn on in the Prefs or anything? Or what I may be doing wrong? Any answers are appreciated.

  1. It might just be confusion with the User Name... call up the HotSync application on the TX screen itself, and check the User Name on the upper right hand side.

If it's not your User Name, that could be the problem!

What you'd need to do in that case is (a) hard reset the TX and then (b) do a HotSync of the TX.  If it's been properly reset, it should ask you on this "first" HotSync which user you want to sync to, and you can then choose your own user name.

Also, before that first Hotsync, you might want to clear down your old backup folder... it may contain applications and settings that were only compatible with the Zire.

Where your backup folder exists depends on the first device you ever Hotsync'd as the standard has changed over the years.  It'll be in...

    C:\Program Files\palmOne\

    C:\Program Files\Palm\

    C:\Program Files\Handspring\

    C:\Palm\

...and the next folder will be a hash of your User ID (so, for example, "John Smith" would have subfolder "SmithJ") and then there'll be a folder "backup" which you can copy to another location and then clear down.

It should then be safe to Hotsync your Palm TX against your old User ID.

    Hope this helps!

    Cheers

    Steve
