  1. well make sure your router is on and you enter the security key(network code) ok or check your settings

  2. 1)  Sounds obvious, but:  Be sure your wi-fi antenna is turned on!  You wouldn't believe the number of calls that I get where nothing else is wrong!

    2)  Make sure the access point is not a secured one; if it's private or secured, you won't be able to get onto it unless you have the key and/or the client software, if applicable.

    3)  Be sure you have enough signal strength.  This has nothing to do with the bars of service you're getting on your phone; that's from cell towers, and cell towers don't carry wi-fi.

    4)  Be sure that you have selected a wi-fi access point.  These days, many locations have several.  Trouble is, they may not all be accessible to you (a neighbor in an adjoining apartment, a business, or something else entirely nearby may show up as "available networks," but you won't be able to access them).  Be sure that you have actually SELECTED the wi-fi access point that is yours to connect to, and to which you are entitled one way or another.

    5)  Be sure you are NEAR a wi-fi access point.  Many people confuse cell phone connectivity with wi-fi connectivity, and they're two completely separate capabilities.  Cell phones connect by dialing an access code and connecting to a cell network; the wi-fi devices in some handsets are no different than the wi-fi in your laptop, and MUST be close to a wi-fi access point to work.
