Question:

Palm mute strumming?

I seem to have trouble palm muting while doing an up strum (no problem with down strumming). The bottom string tends to ring because the movement of my hand performing an up strum results in a slight lift of my hand from the string. Any tips on how to overcome this? Maybe a tried-and-true way of doing so?

  1. ok, well, here's how i do and no afterring whatsoever

    do this:

    down up down

on the first 2 strums you will do the muting. here's how to:

place the side of your fist on the strings while going down(no pressure just so that they dont ring). DONOT LIFT YOUR HAND. then, you dont have to strum all the strings, just pivot your wrist a lil, just alil while strumming up WITHOUT PICKING YOUR HAND UP. then just do a regular strum down.

    hope you get it

  2. Practise not moving your hand and just reaching with your fingers.

  3. i move my palm while muting and have no problems. the only way you can get over your issue is to practice more. as far as the ringing strings that's a pick control issue. usually when you palm mute strum, you dont strum all the strings. you strum 4 or 5 unless its a palm muted chord as an accent. if its an accent, then you want a lighter touch on all the strings and kind of a  half muted sound.
